The Kogi State government has denied the rumours making the round that the state government has embarked on spiritual cleansing by destroying all roundabouts in Lokoja, the state capital. It said the move was meant for the beautification of the state capital insisting that it was not true as it was aimed at beautifying the capital city. Rumour about the spiritual cleansing exercise had earlier gained ground when the Lugard Roundabout in front of the Government House was removed overnight with Lugard statue, following the first hand information that charms, human heads were buried in all roundabouts in Lokoja and the governor ordered for destruction for spiritual reasons.
By yesterday morning virtually all the roundabouts in Lokoja had been uprooted giving credence to the rumours making the round in the town But the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. David Onoja, dismissed the rumour, saying the move was meant for the beautification of the state capital. Onoja explained that the government wanted to build befitting roundabouts to elevate the status of Lokoja as a state capital. He pointed out that the state government had earlier removed all the billboards littered all over the city in readiness for the beautification of Lokoja. “The government is planning to build gigantic roundabout and beautiful roundabouts that nobody will put posters on.
Before now Lokoja looked like a glorified state capital. With the removal of billboards and posters, things are gradually taking shape.” Reacting to the insinuation, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, in a statement pointed out that by the modal status of Lokoja as the gateway to the North, East and West, it is supposed to be an attractive state capital in order to meet the expectations of potential tourists. “The administration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello is poised to give the city a facelift by removing the substandard roundabouts within the city with the intention of replacing them with beautiful ones, befitting of its status. This administration will not live with substandard structures that misrepresent our identity as a state,” he stressed.
