Men of the Bar and Bench across the country last Sunday praised and worshipped God at the Headquarters’ Church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Throne of Grace Parish, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, ministered to them at the special prayer programme which had in attendance other judicial workers and students. Richard Eghaghe brings you excerpts from the sermon.
Luke 13:10-17, “And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. And, behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity 18 years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, (I pray that Jesus will call you to him today) and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity”. (I decreed that whatever is holding anyone bond be loose in Jesus’ name). “And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.” (I pray one more time, that miracle that will cause you to glorify God for the rest of your life, receive it right now). And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation (can you believe that?), because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath day, and said unto the people, ‘There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day. The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these 18 years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day? And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed (I pray that all your adversaries will be ashamed): and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.” Tell your neighbour, very soon, you will be rejoicing with me.
The elders have a saying that, people don’t want you for joy. They don’t want you to rejoice. They don’t want you to be healed, they don’t want it to be well with you. Let us face the facts. When you are poor, they hate you for being poor. Even the Bible said so. It said the poor is hated of his neigbours. If you are poor and the are discussing in the family circles, and you have the brightest idea, they ask you to shut up. People are talking and you are talking. This is simply because you are poor, and if you are rich, you are in trouble, you are a target. In those days, when all you had was a second-hand bicycle, and maybe a pair of shoes and so on, you don’t need a bodyguard. Nobody is coming to steal your second-hand bicycle. The day you begin to move from one car to two, if you like yourself… anyway, all you need to do is to go to Ikoyi. If you see the kind of houses, you will know that some houses there look more like Kirikiri Prison. They hate you if you are poor, they hate you if you are rich, they hate you when you are succeeding. But thank God, the Bible says we have an advocate. 1John 2: 1- 2 says Jesus Christ is our advocate. We have somebody who pleads our cause, somebody who will say whether you people like it or not, I am going to bless this person, I am going to support him.
I mean, look at this story: a woman had been sick for 18 years. The Bible says she was bond. In other words, the devil bonds her and no matter how she tried, she couldn’t lift up herself. She had been going around for 18 years. Then Jesus saw her in the church and asked her to come. He made a decree and said: ‘Alright woman, you have suffered enough, an end will come to your suffering today. Immediately, she was loose. You will think that everybody will begin to rejoice. Even the leader of the church, the Bible said was full of indignation, which means his eyes turned red and said she should not have been healed. We should have allowed her to keep on suffering. Well, the devil is a liar. All those who said you should not get your breakthrough, the Lord will put them to shame.
When you go through the scripture, you will discover again and again that the world does not want you to be healthy. They don’t want you to prosper. Thank God that we have someone who said I am the Lord that healeth thee (Exodus 15:26). God said: “It doesn’t matter whether they want you to be healthy or not, I will heal you anyway, and after I have healed you. When you read 2Kings 4:1-7, you see a story there. A woman was a widow and she was in debt. All she had left were two sons. You know what the creditors said? “We give you 24 hours to pay or else we will sell your sons. Can you imagine that? They want to sell the son of a widow for money. That is the world. When they see someone who is down, they want to crush him. You fall down; they don’t want you to rise. I have come in the name of the Almighty God to tell those of you who might be down right now that you will rise up in Jesus’ name. It is Jesus who said: ‘I have come that they might have life and have it abundantly’. Thank God for our Advocate.
Do you know that people of the world would not want you to be free? When you read Mark 5:1-20, it tells us of a mad man who had 6,000 demons in him. He was so mad that he was living in the graveyard. The Bible tells us that the people didn’t do anything to see how he will get well. Instead, they were binding him with filters of iron and he will keep on breaking them off. But they like it that way…Let him be mad, let him remain mad. How do I know? One day Jesus was passing by, He saw this man and set him free. What did the people do? They told Jesus to go away. We don’t want you here! Why should you begin to cast out demons from this man? Get away from our place! In other words, they preferred that the man be mad. I would have thought that they would rejoice and say ‘thank you sir, this fellow has been mad for so many years, now you have set him free. Oh stay’. One would have thought that they will throw a party for him. They asked Him to leave. That is the world but thanks for the advocate. There are forces everywhere trying to hold you down. But Psalm 24:7-10 tells me that Jesus Christ, our advocate, is the Lord of host. He is the controller of all forces. It is in His name that I am decreeing this morning that anyone of you in any form of bondage, you shall be free in Jesus’ name. I remember very well: we were praying for somebody. We were young then and we felt that if we want to cast out demons we must shout very well, so that the devil will hear you. We were ordering: Get out in the name of Jesus, get out… Do you know some people came to us and said that we were making noise? We wanted to set the captives, what concerned you is about the noise you say we are making? I have good news for you. All those who said you will not be free, in their presence you will be free in Jesus’ name. Do you know the world does not want you to be promoted? No, no, no, when you announce your promotion, and they come to eat and drink with you, don’t think they are happy.
They are only eating because they feel you are giving them free food. Go through the scripture and you will find a lot of things there. In 1Samuel 16:11-13, when Samuel came to the house of Jesse to appoint a king, do you know that even the father of David did not present him? He presented seven boys, and forgot David. The man of God had to ask: are these all your sons? The way he answered was so bad. He said, well there is one more; that one can’t be king. It was the way he spoke that caused the man of God to say we will not sit down until you go and bring that boy. Even his father didn’t want him to be promoted. We have several other examples. Take Joseph for example. God gave him a dream that he was going to be number one. His brothers said we will kill him and see what will become of his dream. But thank God we have an advocate who said in John 12:32, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
