Promasidor Nigeria Limited, makers of Cowbell Milk has inaugurated the 2014 edition of the Cowbell National Secondary Schools Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC).It is for no fee for all students in JSS3 and SS2 in the government-approved schools across the country.
Currently in its 14th edition, NASSMAC is a competition aimed at demystifying mathematics as a subject and reawakening the consciousness and interest of students at that level in the subject.
Addressing journalists in Lagos on Monday, the Commercial Director of the company, Mr. Kachi Onubogu said through the competition, the company had been able to inspire hundreds of thousands of students on the study of mathematics in the country. He noted that the number kept rising by the day.
According to him, Promasidor’s commitment over the years to NASSMAC has seen the initiative grows from a small school competition in Lagos in 1998 to a national competition with great reputation in the industry.
He said while the three top winners at the senior category would go home with N300, 000, N250, 000 and N200, 000 in addition to trophy, medal, certificate and many branded items, their counterparts at the junior level would receive 250,000, N200,000 and N150,000 respectively.
He added that bumper rewards were also awaiting maths teachers who had stayed committed to the course of the competition as well as their respective schools.
Stating the requirements for participation, the company’s Manager in charge of Dairy category, Mrs. Abiola Inawo said the competition which was open to all students between 10 and 18 years of age would be in stages starting from state to region and to national level.
He noted that forms for participation was free and could be assessed on either the company’s website or state ministries of education, stressing that the forms have to be properly filled, stamped and signed by the school principals but presented by the participating students to the officials at the examination centres at every stage of the competition.
In his remark, the Director -General of the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, Prof. Adewale Solarin lauded Promasidor Nigeria for sponsoring such competition which he said had helped to enhance the students’ performances in maths, especially at the senior school certificate examinations.
While announcing that his centre would sponsor the top 10 winners of the competition at the senior level who are ready to study mathematics in any university of their choice around the world, he also called on other corporate organisations to emulate Promasidor’s example by investing in the development of education in the country.
