TUC may go on strike over new electricity tariff

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has rejected the Federal Government’s plans to hike electricity tariff, saying the plan will bring untold hardship on Nigerians. Speaking while reacting to the planned increase, which takes effect from June 1, the President of TUC, Mr. Peter Esele, described the decision as “unjustifiable and absurd from any right thinking government.” Esele said the new tariff would jerk up electricity bill by over 90 per cent, describing the development as grossly unfair, against the backdrop of the current poor power supply in the country. ...

Police arrest seven suspected kidnappers

The Lagos State Police Command yesterday said it has arrested seven people suspected to have masterminded the kidnapping of Ayodele Olaye, who was kidnapped on April 22, 2012 but was released after the payment of N5 million ransom on April 25. FRSC arrests 679 traffic offenders

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ekiti State yesterday said it has apprehended 679 traffic violators in the first quarter of the year. FRSC Ekiti Sector Commander, Rindom Kumven, said no fewer than 651 vehicles were arrested within the period. He said the arrests were a demonstration of the corps’ determination to improve safety of lives and vehicles on Ekiti roads. ...

As planned mass protests’ ultimatum expires

The two-week ultimatum issued over two weeks ago by the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), in conjunction with other prominent civil society activists, for the Federal Government to take decisive action on the recent subsidy fraud expositions, and which may be the right tonic for the country at this critical period of lame official responses, so far, on the matter, has eventually come and gone. Some have shrugged off the ultimatum as another civil society grandstanding, or ranting; but going by the success of the organized protests earlier in the year against fuel subsidy removal, it appears that popular outcries against mismanagement of the public sphere are no longer all bark and no bite.

The revelation was first made by the former captain of the Super Eagles (now the coach of the team), Stepen Keshi, in an interview hosted by the DSTV Supersport last year in which he co-starred with Clemens Westerhof, another former Super Eagles coach. Keshi had declared in that interview that during the USA 94 World Cup, a group of players in the then star-studded Eagles decided to frustrate Rashidi Yekini, who recently passed on, by not passing the ball to him. Another member of that team, Tijani Babangida, in an interview with the National Mirror after the demise of Yekini, said the gangling striker was so distraught by the petty and unpatriotic gang up that he went on his kneels to beg his teammates for a change of heart.

Perturbed by what he sees as unhealthy conjecture and politicking over 2015 election, President Good-luck Jonathan recently warned against the danger of overheating the polity, amidst the security challenges rampaging the entire country. Articulating this position, his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity), Dr Reuben Abati, noted the ex-tent of pain and anguish Mr. President has shown in “the growing furore in political circles and media over his alleged plans to seek re-election in 2015”. Going further, Dr Abati noted that President Jonathan’s primary concern now was how to deliver on his election promises encapsulated in his Transformation Agenda.
